AJENDA ya WATOTO eNEWS: 16/Jun/2010: Children’s Agenda is launched in celebration of Day of the African Child!

It’s a fact... 22.2 million Tanzanians are children under 18 years. 8 million of them live in poverty. 1 in 4 girls under 18 have already begun childbearing and 50% of babies are born without skilled attendants. 25 women die every day of women during pregnancy or childbirth. Over 2.5m children are chronically malnourished and 43,000 children’s are expected to die in 2010 due to malnutrition.
Although children represent more than half of Tanzania’s population, they have no vote and must rely on those who are committed to respecting, protecting and fulfilling their rights. Thus, early on the 16th of June, 2010, the Caucus for Children’s Rights (CCR) launched the Children’s Agenda in cooperation with the Municipal Council in Arusha. We gratefully acknowledge all those who were able to attend and celebrate with us at the Stadium this morning – your support and your commitment to investing in children is invaluable. THANK YOU!]

eNEWS: 09 - November - 2009: The Children's Act has passed! Now is the time to act...

It is with great pleasure that we share the news that, on November 4th, the new Act of the Child 2009 was unanimously passed by Parliament.

A delegation from the CCR was there to witness this important event and to share the delight with other CSO actors who have been lobbying for the Act. Significantly, the Act was passed with almost 80% of the revisions that civil society had requested.

Importantly, the work of the 50% Campaign is NOT finished...

eNEWS: 12-September-2009: The Children's Act has been tabled in Parliament

In Tanzania, the Law of the Child Act was tabled in Parliament on the 31st July, 2009. We now have an extremely narrow window of opportunity for strengthening its provisions and ensuring that it promotes the best interests of the Tanzanian child.

It is vital that a high-quality, relevant and effective piece of legislation is passed - one which provides a framework for establishing good practice and minimum standards for duty-bearers who work with children. An Act which continues to allow discrimination against certain groups of children would be worse than no Act at all!

eNEWS: 26-June-2009: On June 16, the Caucus for Children's Rights was launched in celebration of the Day of the African Child

The Day of the African Child (16th June) was an ideal time to celebrate the launch of the Caucus for Children’s Rights (CCR) with an evening of information, entertainment and reflection.

The CCR is committed to advancing the rights of children in Tanzania, and in doing so building a country that protects the best interests of all its citizens. The CCR has recently applied for registration as a Tanzanian NGO to formalize the informal collaboration that we have been engaged in since 2004. We are a consortium of institutions and individuals who are passionate about the rights and welfare of children and youth. We provide a vibrant and innovative forum to replicate good practice, share learning and to speak with one voice so as to engage communities and leaders to uphold the best interests of children and young people in Tanzania. Our mission is to effectively advance the protection and empowerment of children and young people in Tanzania.
